In 1867, the German illustrator D. Englert documented a mid-nineteenth-century German classroom with the precision of a technical draughtsman — rows of wooden desks with sloping writing surfaces and inkwells, the teacher’s elevated desk at the front, the blackboard that had transformed classroom teaching since the 1820s, and tall windows admitting the natural light that was the only illumination available. Produced in the tradition of German encyclopaedic illustration — the same tradition that gave us Krünitz’s Oeconomische Encyclopädie and Brockhaus’s Conversations-Lexikon — it is an image shaped by decades of educational reform driven by Humboldt, Pestalozzi, and Froebel, and designed to record for posterity the room where a generation of German children learned to read, write, and think.
