In the summer of 1888, Vincent van Gogh was alone in Arlés, in a rented house he had painted yellow, waiting for Paul Gauguin. To decorate the room he had prepared for his friend, he painted sunflowers — a series of still lifes in the yellows and golds and turquoise blues of the Provençal summer, conceived as a symphony of colour and a gesture of welcome. Four of those canvases survive as the most celebrated flower paintings in the history of art. Each size in this collection features a different one.

The 110-piece puzzle carries Fifteen Sunflowers (National Gallery, London, August 1888) — the most iconic of the series, fifteen sunflowers in a terracotta vase against a warm yellow background, the canvas Van Gogh considered his finest floral work. The 252-piece puzzle features Three Sunflowers in a Vase (Private Collection, USA, August 1888) — the first canvas of the series, rarely seen in public, three sunflowers against a light ground with a freshness the later canvases do not quite replicate. The 520-piece puzzle shows Twelve Sunflowers (Neue Pinakothek, Munich, August 1888) — twelve flowers in various stages of bloom against a vibrant turquoise background, signed simply “Vincent” on the vase. The 1014-piece puzzle presents Twelve Sunflowers (Philadelphia Museum of Art, January 1889) — Van Gogh's deliberate self-repetition of the Munich canvas, painted after his breakdown, a meditation on the original as much as a copy of it.
