In 1795, an engraver in Leipzig set his burin to copper and produced a plate that distilled the Linnaean order of the plant world into a single image: Classis XIX. Syngenesia — the class of fused anthers, of sunflowers and daisies and thistles — arranged with the precision of Enlightenment science and the beauty of botanical art at its finest. Both covers reproduce E. G. Geisler’s hand-coloured engraving from an Enlightenment-era botanical compendium, featuring Helianthus sunflowers and Chrysanthemum daisies in full colour, intense orange Calendula, detailed Arnica and thistle capitula with cross-sections of floral anatomy, root diagrams, and seed structures — a scientific classification of the Asteraceae family under Linnaeus’s sexual system rendered in the meticulous style of 18th-century natural history illustration.
