In 1899, Ernst Haeckel began publishing Kunstformen der Natur — Art Forms in Nature — a series of chromolithographic plates created with master lithographer Adolf Glitsch that would change how the world saw biology. Plate 85, Ascidiae, documented the extraordinary beauty of sea squirts: marine invertebrates whose translucent bodies, vibrant pigmentation, and geometric symmetry became one of the defining inspirations of the Art Nouveau movement.
