In the summer of 1798, Pierre-Joseph Redouté was summoned to the Château de Malmaison to document the rose collection of Joséphine Bonaparte. The result, published between 1817 and 1824, is the most celebrated botanical publication in the history of natural history illustration. This journal carries two of its plates.

The front cover reproduces Rosa Gallica Rosea Flore Simplici (Single Provins Rose) from Pierre-Joseph Redouté's Les Roses (Firmin Didot, Paris, 1817–1824) — one of the oldest cultivated roses in European history, shown in two stages of bloom with five simple pink petals opening around prominent golden stamens, rendered in Redouté's stipple engraving technique: a dense grid of dots creating luminous colour transitions finished by hand for each impression. The back cover presents Rosa Eglanteria Sub Rubra (Red Sweet Brier) — a flowering branch of bright pink single-petalled wild roses with detailed green foliage, capturing the arching habit of the European hedgerow rose with the same precision and grace that earned Redouté the title Raphael of Flowers.
