A bandada of wild geese rises from a misty marsh at dawn — and a solitary goose stands still beneath a full moon — when Ohara Koson captured these two moments in woodblock print, he distilled a thousand years of Japanese feeling for the wild goose into compositions of extraordinary economy and beauty.

The front cover reproduces Flying Geese (c. 1926), one of Ohara Koson's most celebrated Shin-hanga compositions — a bandada of wild geese rising from a misty marsh at dawn, wings spread in the moment of lift, rendered in the precise naturalistic style of the kachō-e tradition with the soft gradations of colour that define the Shin-hanga movement. The back cover presents Goose at Full Moon (1900–1936), a serene nocturnal composition in which a single goose stands among reeds and wildflowers beneath a luminous full moon — a classic of the ukiyo-e tradition, combining meticulous observation with the contemplative stillness that made Koson (1877–1945) one of the most admired bird-and-flower artists of the Taishō and early Shōwa periods.
