William Jowit Titford (1784–1826), a British physician-naturalist who spent years in the West Indies, published his Sketches towards a Hortus Botanicus Americanus in 1811 — one of the most visually ambitious botanical works of the early 19th century, documenting the medicinal and ornamental plants of the Americas according to the Linnaean classification system with hand-coloured plates of extraordinary richness. The front cover features Plate 15 — a composition of nineteen species including Arum triphyllum (jack-in-the-pulpit), Ipomoea quamoclit (cypress vine), Vinca, and Hibiscus, representing the botanical wealth of the West Indies and the Americas; the back cover presents Plate 7 with nine plants of medicinal and economic significance — Asclepias curassavica (tropical milkweed), Amaryllis coccinea (scarlet amaryllis), Laurus cinnamomum (cinnamon), and Guilandina moringa (moringa) — together a complete portrait of the useful and beautiful plants of the New World as a Regency-era physician-naturalist saw them.
