In the late 1940s, G.S. (Sid) Cooper painted Piccadilly Circus at its most vivid — a swirl of red double-decker buses with Hovis advertisements, green Green Line coaches, and the iconic neon signs of Bovril, Schweppes, Guinness, and Wrigley's illuminating the roundabout of a city finding its stride again after four years of war; widely reproduced as a Mayfair postcard in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Cooper's painting captures the slightly exaggerated-perspective transport painting style that made British commercial art of the period so immediately recognisable, the front cover featuring the red bus and neon signs at the heart of the composition while the back cover continues the seamless full-wrap, placing the reader at the centre of Piccadilly Circus and completing one of the most vivid portraits of postwar London ever committed to paint.
