Carry the spirit of escape — when Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890–1954) produced his first railway posters for Frank Pick's visionary campaign in 1915, he turned a train journey into an invitation to dream: the front cover presents Oxhey Woods, a post-impressionist vision of the Hertfordshire woodland rendered in bold, flat colour fields of green, amber, and gold printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd., while the back cover presents The North Downs, a stylised panorama of the chalk ridge of South East England printed by Johnson, Riddle & Company Ltd. — among the very first four posters Kauffer produced for the railways, landmark works now in the collection of the London Transport Museum, and defining images of the moment when modernist art entered the daily life of the British public not through gallery walls but through the platforms and carriages of the city's transport network.
