Scissors, coloured paper, and a black background — when Ellen W. created her Album of Cut-Paper Flowers in Great Britain in 1835, she transformed British wildflowers into intricate botanical compositions that are simultaneously scientific record and decorative art, one of the most intimate and painstaking techniques of the early Victorian era.
The front cover reproduces Plate 04 — yellow, blue, and pink wildflowers tied with a small ribbon against a stark black background, each bloom individually cut and arranged by hand. The back cover presents Plate 14 — Crepis rubra (pink hawk's-beard), Scorzonera hispanica (black salsify), and Lactuca perennis (perennial lettuce) from the Asteraceae family, rendered in the same dramatic black background technique that makes each petal and stem appear illuminated.
