Carry the splendour of the last great world's fair before the storm — when Ghent hosted the Exposition Universelle et Internationale in 1913, it staged the most magnificent celebration of the Belle Époque, drawing millions of visitors to a city adorned with medieval towers and a reconstructed Flemish village that existed for one luminous season alone.
The front cover reproduces Oud Vlaendren — the official poster designed by René De Cramer and printed in lithography by Franz Poelvoorde for the Exposition Universelle et Internationale de Gand (Ghent, 1913), presenting an aerial view of the idealised Flemish medieval streetscape reconstructed in the Citadelpark for a single season, under the direction of Commissioner General Jean de Hemptinne. The back cover presents the three iconic towers of Ghent — the Church of Saint Nicholas, the Belfry, and Saint Bavo's Cathedral — adorned with festive garlands in the Art Nouveau lithograph attributed to Jos Cornelis, combining the decorative sensibility of the Belle Époque with a geometric clarity that anticipates early modernism.
