Two landmark works of Victorian geological illustration on a single journal — Vuillemin's French cross-section of the Earth's crust and Emslie's British stratigraphic column (c.1850), from Primitive granite to Alluvium, epoch by epoch.

The front cover reproduces Vuillemin's French cross-section of the Earth's crust — a chromolithographic diagram showing volcanic intrusions, sedimentary strata, and geological formations from the surface to the deep interior, published in Paris in the mid-19th century. The back cover presents Emslie's British stratigraphic column (c.1850), engraved by James Reynolds of London — a vertical timeline of geological epochs from Primitive granite at the base to Alluvium at the surface, color-coded by formation and annotated with characteristic fossil species.
