The Geology and Palaeontology Chart published by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son (London, c. 1880) mapped deep time from Igneous Rocks at the base through the Palaeozoic age of arthropods and fishes with Calamites and Ammonites, the Mesozoic age of reptiles with pterosaurs and plesiosaurs, and the Cainozoic age of mammals with elephants and Palaeotherium — each era rendered with the botanical and zoological accuracy that defined Victorian educational illustration at its finest — while the back cover presents an imaginary cross-section of Mount Etna (c. 1910), documenting the internal structure of Sicily's great stratovolcano: the central magma conduit and secondary fissures penetrating layers of trachytic rock, igneous rocks, granites, porphyries and basalts at the base, underground cavities filled with vapor, and the town of Nicolosi on the flank at sea level.
