Carry the delicate beauty of remembrance — when Pierre-Joseph Redouté gave the forget-me-not and the heliotrope their most exquisite botanical portraits, and the language of flowers transformed the garden into a vocabulary of love, loyalty, and longing.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840) — court artist to Marie Antoinette and Empress Joséphine, and the artist universally known as “le Raphaël des fleurs” — spent his career perfecting a stipple engraving technique of extraordinary delicacy that could capture the translucency of petals, the texture of leaves, and the subtle gradations of color with a fidelity no previous botanical illustrator had achieved. His masterwork, Choix des plus belles fleurs (1827–1833), published in Paris in 144 hand-colored stipple engravings, represents the summit of French botanical illustration. This distinguished hardcover journal presents two of its most beloved plates: Redouté's forget-me-not on the front, and his heliotrope on the back.

Front Cover — Myosotis scorpioides, Le ne m'oublie pas, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, Choix des plus belles fleurs, 1827:
The front cover presents Redouté's plate of Myosotis scorpioides — the forget-me-not, the ne m'oublie pas, the flower whose name in every European language is a plea for remembrance. The small blue blossoms with their yellow centers are rendered with the stipple engraving technique at its most delicate, the curling scorpioid cyme of the stem captured with botanical accuracy. In the Victorian language of flowers — the floriographie that transformed the garden into a vocabulary of sentiment — the forget-me-not meant true love, loyalty, and the plea “do not forget me” that lovers, friends, and the dying have whispered to those they leave behind.

Back Cover — Heliotropium arborescens, Héliotrope du Pérou, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, Choix des plus belles fleurs, 1827:
The back cover presents Redouté's plate of Heliotropium arborescens — the garden heliotrope, native to Peru, whose clusters of tiny mauve-purple flowers carry one of the most intoxicating fragrances in the garden: a warm, sweet scent of vanilla and cherry that made it one of the most beloved plants in 19th-century French and English gardens. In the language of flowers, the heliotrope symbolized devotion — its name derived from the Greek for “sun-turning,” the plant that always faces the light, as the devoted heart always turns toward its beloved.
