Carry the coral wonder of the Caribbean — when Mark Catesby gave the American Flamingo its first great scientific portrait, and the Bahama Islands revealed their extraordinary natural history to a British naturalist who understood that beauty and accuracy were the same thing.

Mark Catesby (1683–1749) was the first naturalist to systematically document the flora and fauna of Britain's North American colonies and Caribbean territories, producing The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands (1731–1743) — the founding document of American natural history illustration. Sponsored by Sir Hans Sloane, Catesby taught himself to etch his own plates, earning the title of “father of American ornithology” from later naturalists including John James Audubon. Plates 73 and 74 document the American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus bahamensis) in two complementary studies: the full bird with Keratophyton sea fan coral on the front, and a detailed anatomical study of the flamingo's remarkable curved bill with gorgonian coral on the back.

Front Cover — Phoenicopterus Bahamensis & Keratophyton Coral, Plate 73, Mark Catesby, Natural History of Carolina, 1731:
The front cover presents Catesby's Plate 73 — the American Flamingo in full, its striking coral plumage rendered with the hand-colored etching technique Catesby developed himself, standing alongside a Keratophyton sea fan coral that documents the Caribbean marine environment. The flamingo's coral-pink plumage, long elegant neck, black-tipped wings, and characteristic wading posture are captured with the precision of a naturalist who had observed the bird in the shallow lagoons and salt flats of the Bahama Islands — documenting not just the animal but its ecosystem.

Back Cover — Flamingo Bill Anatomical Study & Gorgonian Coral, Plate 74, Mark Catesby, 1731:
The back cover presents Catesby's Plate 74 — a detailed anatomical study of the flamingo's extraordinary curved bill alongside a gorgonian coral. The flamingo's bill — uniquely bent downward at the midpoint, with a specialized filtering mechanism that allows the bird to feed on algae, diatoms, and small crustaceans by pumping water through lamellae — is rendered with the anatomical precision of a scientist who understood that the most extraordinary things in nature are often the most functional. Together, Plates 73 and 74 offer a complete portrait of the American Flamingo: the whole bird in its environment, and the anatomical detail that explains its extraordinary way of life.
