The first book in history devoted entirely to citrus — Giovanni Battista Ferrari's Hesperides (Rome, 1646), published under Barberini patronage, brought together Baroque science, mythology, and sumptuous copper engravings to celebrate the golden fruits of the Hesperides garden; the front cover features Aurantium Flore Duplici engraved on black ground by Cornelis Bloemaert after Pietro da Cortona, while the back cover presents Aurantium Stellatum Rosenum, a star-shaped ornamental citrus from Ferrari's encyclopaedic documentation of over 60 cultivars known to 17th-century Italian gardens.
