In 1915, Thomas E. Hill — one of the most prolific popular publishers of late nineteenth-century America — documented twenty-three dog breeds across Europe and America in his practical guide The Open Door to Independence. The front cover presents eleven working, sporting, and companion breeds: Collie, English Mastiff, Bloodhound, English Fox-Hound, Scottish Deer Hound, Smooth and Rough St. Bernard, Newfoundland Dog, Pug, and Pomeranian. The back cover surveys twelve terrier breeds — including the White English Terrier, now extinct — among them the Airedale, Irish Terrier, Bedlington, Yorkshire, and Dandie Dinmont. LeBonJournal has preserved Hill’s original compositions and added warm watercolor to bring each breed’s coat and character to life.
