In 1611, Johann Theodor de Bry published the Florilegium Novum in Frankfurt, capturing the exotic Oriental hyacinths arriving from the Ottoman Empire with the meticulous copper-plate precision of the de Bry family tradition — Plate 57 on the front cover shows Hyacinthus orientalis maior flore caeruleo and its white companion framed by the decorative dark border characteristic of early 17th-century Frankfurt publishing, while Plate 58 on the back documents further varieties of the Oriental hyacinth, completing a full-wrap portrait of one of the most coveted bulbs of the age, at the height of the European passion for exotic Ottoman flowers that would culminate in the tulip mania of the 1630s.
