Carry the wisdom of England’s most beloved herbalist—when Nicholas Culpeper published his Complete Herbal in 1652, he placed the healing knowledge of centuries into the hands of ordinary people, and changed the history of medicine forever.
This hardcover journal reproduces two hand-coloured plates from Culpeper’s Complete Herbal, the masterwork of Nicholas Culpeper (1616–1654)—English botanist, physician, and astrologer whose radical mission was to make medical knowledge freely accessible to all. First published in 1652 as The English Physician, Culpeper’s Herbal became the standard guide for herbal medicine for over three centuries. The hand-coloured plates reproduced here are from later editions—printed around 1789 or 1815—in which engravers and colourists brought Culpeper’s botanical descriptions to vivid chromatic life, creating some of the most beautiful and historically significant medicinal plant illustrations in the English tradition.
Front Cover — Plate 10, Culpeper’s Complete Herbal, c.1789–1815: Twelve medicinal plants arranged in three rows of four, each specimen labelled with its traditional English name: Spicknel, St Peter’s Wort, Polypody, and Periwinkle in the top row; Spikenard, Purslane, Pellitory of the Wall, and Male Peony in the middle; Small Spleenwort, White Poplar, Pomegranate Tree, and Large Spleenwort in the bottom. Each plant is rendered with the careful botanical precision that made Culpeper’s plates the reference of choice for generations of English herbalists, apothecaries, and country physicians.
Back Cover — Plate 11, Culpeper’s Complete Herbal, c.1789–1815: A second chart of twelve medicinal plants completes the botanical panorama: Privet, Plantain, Pellitory of Spain, and Pepperwort in the top row; Wild Parsnip, Female Peony, Pennyroyal, and Pennywort in the middle; Buckhorn Plantain, Primroses, Pear Tree, and Black Poplar in the bottom. Together, the two plates present 24 of the most celebrated medicinal plants in the English herbal tradition—a complete pocket pharmacopoeia for the curious and the learned alike.
