When European naturalists first encountered cacti in the New World, they were confronted with plants unlike anything in their botanical experience — armoured, leafless, flowering in the desert with improbable beauty. This journal brings together two historic responses to that encounter, separated by two centuries but united by the same spirit of careful observation.

The front cover features Herman Saftleven's 1683 drawing of a flowering prickly pear — created in Utrecht at the height of the Dutch Golden Age, its pads rendered with careful attention to the geometry of the spines, crowned with flowers that open with an extravagance that seems almost incongruous on such an armoured plant. The back cover presents G. Mütrel's 1892 scientific plate from Brockhaus' Konversations-Lexikon: six species of the Cactaceae family — Nopalea coccinellifera, Cephalocereus senilis (Old Man Cactus), Cereus giganteus (Saguaro), Mammillaria longimamma, Rhipsalis paradoxa, and Echinocactus — rendered in the encyclopedic tradition of 19th-century botanical science.
