Carry the spirit of Dutch botanical artistry — when Arentina Hendrica Arendsen transformed the bulbous plants of Haarlem into chromolithographic still lifes of extraordinary richness and botanical precision.
Arentina Hendrica Arendsen (1836–1915), born in Amsterdam and working in Haarlem from 1851, was one of the 19th century's most accomplished botanical still life painters, specializing in the richly elaborated and realistic floral compositions that defined Dutch horticultural art at its peak. Trained by the renowned romantic landscape painter Cornelis Lieste, she contributed her finest work to Haarlem's Flora (Album van Eeden), published between 1872 and 1881 by A.C. van Eeden & Co. — a landmark publication celebrating the bulbous and tuberous plants that made Haarlem the historic center of the Dutch bulb industry. This distinguished hardcover journal brings together two chromolithograph plates from the series, documenting eighteen species across front and back covers.
Front Cover — Nine Bulbous Plants, Arentina Arendsen, Haarlem's Flora, 1872:
The front cover presents nine botanical studies rendered with the vibrant color and anatomical precision that defined Arendsen's chromolithographic work: Amaryllis (Vallota Purpurea), pink and yellow Hyacinths, Orange Lily (Lilium thunbergianum), Portuguese Squill (Scilla peruviana), Poppy Anemone (Anemone coronaria), Japanese Anemone (Anemone japonica), Spring Cyclamen (Cyclamen vernum), Double Yellow Tulip, and Great Camas (Camassia esculenta). Each specimen is documented with the botanical accuracy that served both as a garden reference for bulb enthusiasts and as decorative art celebrating Dutch horticultural heritage.
Back Cover — Nine Spring & Summer Bulbs, Haarlem's Flora, 1872–1881:
The back cover presents nine additional species from the same series: Irises, Clivia miniata (Natal Lily), Ranunculus, Single Early Tulips, Narcissus (Daffodils), Spanish Iris (Iris xiphium), Tritoma (Kniphofia/Red Hot Poker), White Lilies (Lilium candidum/Madonna Lilies), and Tiger Lilies. Together, the two covers document eighteen of the most celebrated bulbous plants of the Haarlem tradition — a complete chromolithographic survey of the flowers that defined Dutch floriculture in the 19th century.
