Carry the quiet elegance of Victorian natural history — when Anne Pratt walked the meadows and marshlands of Britain and transformed the humblest grasses into objects of scientific wonder and artistic beauty.

Anne Pratt (1806–1893) was one of England's most beloved and prolific botanical illustrators, responsible for popularizing natural history among the general public — especially women and children — during an era when botany was becoming a cherished Victorian pastime. Her masterwork, The Flowering Plants, Grasses, Sedges, and Ferns of Great Britain (1855–1873), used the innovative Baxter color printing method to produce affordable chromolithographs of remarkable accuracy and beauty. So celebrated was her work that Queen Victoria herself requested copies of all her publications. This distinguished hardcover journal brings together two of Pratt's finest grass plates — Plate 251 on the front and Plate 250 on the back.

Front Cover — Plate 251: Hare's Tail, Millet & Beard Grasses, 1855:
The front cover presents Plate 251, illustrating six British grass species with the meticulous precision that made Pratt's work indispensable to Victorian naturalists. Ovate Hare's Tail Grass (Lagurus ovatus), Spreading Millet Grass (Milium effusum), Awned Nit Grass (Gastridium lendigerum), Common Feather Grass, Annual Beard Grass, and Perennial Beard Grass are each rendered in full botanical detail, accompanied by diagrams of their floral segments. The chromolithograph technique gives each specimen a luminous, almost watercolor quality — scientific documentation elevated to art.

Back Cover — Plate 250: Canary Grass, Sea Reed & Cat's-tail, 1855:
The back cover features Plate 250, depicting seven species of British grasses including Cultivated Canary Grass (Phalaris canariensis), Reed Canary Grass (Phalaris arundinacea), Common Sea Reed (Ammophila arenaria), Common Cat's-tail Grass (Phleum pratense), Alpine Cat's-tail Grass, Purple Stalked Cat's-tail, and Meadow Foxtail. Each specimen is rendered with the same meticulous care, the delicate seed heads and stems captured with a precision that served both the field botanist and the armchair naturalist equally well.
