Anne Pratt (1806–1893) was one of England’s most beloved botanical illustrators — so celebrated that Queen Victoria herself requested copies of all her publications — and her masterwork, The Flowering Plants, Grasses, Sedges, and Ferns of Great Britain (1855–1873), used the innovative Baxter color printing method to produce chromolithographs of remarkable accuracy and beauty; this journal carries two of her finest grass plates: Plate 251 on the front — six British grass species including Lagurus ovatus, Milium effusum, and Gastridium lendigerum — and Plate 250 on the back, depicting seven species including Phalaris canariensis, Ammophila arenaria, and Phleum pratense, each rendered with luminous chromolithograph precision that served both the field botanist and the armchair naturalist equally well.
