Anne Pratt (1806–1893) was one of England’s most beloved botanical illustrators — so celebrated that Queen Victoria herself requested copies of all her publications — and her masterwork, The Flowering Plants, Grasses, Sedges, and Ferns of Great Britain (1855–1873), used the innovative Baxter color printing method to produce chromolithographs of remarkable accuracy and beauty; this journal carries two of her finest grass plates across its full wraparound cover: Plate 251 on the front — six British grass species including Lagurus ovatus, Milium effusum, and Gastridium lendigerum, each rendered with luminous chromolithograph precision — and Plate 250 on the back, depicting seven species including Phalaris canariensis, Ammophila arenaria, and Phleum pratense, the delicate seed heads and stems captured with a care that served both the field botanist and the armchair naturalist equally well.
