There is a particular quality of light in the finest Dutch botanical watercolours — a luminosity that seems to come from within the flower itself rather than from any external source, as if the painter had found a way to capture not just the appearance of the petal but its translucency. Between 1872 and 1881, Arentina Hendrica Arendsen (1836–1915) achieved exactly this: her watercolours of garden flowers and exotic species document the natural world with the scientific precision of a naturalist and the sensitivity of an artist, working in a tradition that stretched back to Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch but in the service of something new — the botanical documentation of species that European science was still learning to name and classify.

The back cover presents two South African species: Anomatheca cruenta (now Freesia laxa), its blood-red flowers glowing with an almost translucent intensity, and Vieusseuxia pavonia (now Moraea villosa), the peacock moraea, with its jewel-like markings and extraordinary complexity of colour.
