There is a particular quality of light in the finest Dutch botanical watercolours — a luminosity that seems to come from within the flower itself rather than from any external source, as if the painter had found a way to capture not just the appearance of the petal but its translucency. Between 1872 and 1881, Arentina Hendrica Arendsen (1836–1915) achieved exactly this: her watercolours of garden flowers and exotic species document the natural world with the scientific precision of a naturalist and the sensitivity of an artist, working in a tradition that stretched back to Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch but in the service of something new — the botanical documentation of species that European science was still learning to name and classify.
The front cover carries her Anemone stellata — the star anemone of the Mediterranean basin, rendered in the soft, luminous washes of colour layered with meticulous botanical detail that are her signature. The back cover presents two South African species: Anomatheca cruenta (now Freesia laxa), its blood-red flowers glowing with an almost translucent intensity, and Vieusseuxia pavonia (now Moraea villosa), the peacock moraea, with its jewel-like markings and extraordinary complexity of colour. Together they carry nearly 150 years of Dutch botanical artistry in a single full-wrap watercolour cover.
