In 1912, the editors of the Larousse Médical Illustré commissioned a series of chromolithographic anatomical plates of extraordinary precision and beauty — among them Planche X, a full sagittal section of the human body showing the cranial nerves and viscera, and Planche I, four views of the abdomen and thorax. Printed in deep red, ivory and gold against a black background, these illustrations were designed to make the invisible body visible, in the tradition of French medical education at its Belle Époque peak.
