In the early twentieth century, before the projector and the digital whiteboard, the British science classroom had the wall chart. Large, detailed, precisely illustrated, it hung at the front of the room where every student could see it — a permanent visual reference that shaped the way a generation understood the human body. Robert E. Holding’s Elementary Physiology: The Brain and Nervous System, published by E.J. Arnold & Son Ltd. of London, Edinburgh, and Belfast, was one of the finest examples of this tradition: a complete diagram of the human nervous system — cerebral cortex, cerebellum, spinal cord, cranial nerves, peripheral nervous system — rendered with a precision and clarity that made it both a reliable scientific reference and a visually compelling image.

This journal carries two complementary 1908 illustrations across its wraparound cover. The front features Holding’s brain and nervous system chart; the back presents an illustration from The Human Body and Health — An Elementary Text-Book of Essential Anatomy, Applied Physiology and Practical Hygiene for Schools (1908). Together they represent the Edwardian tradition of scientific education — when anatomy and physiology were taught through wall charts and illustrated textbooks, when understanding the body was considered a matter of genuine public health, and when the best way to teach was also, often, the most beautiful.
