In 1908, six years before the Great War would redraw the map of the world, the Harmsworth Atlas and Gazetteer published two flag charts that captured the political order of the Edwardian moment. The front cover carries Flags of the British Empire — a visual inventory of the territories under British rule at the Empire’s greatest territorial extent, from Canada and Australia to India, Africa, and the Caribbean. The back cover presents European Flags — the national flags of a continent whose empires and kingdoms would be shattered, within a decade, by the catastrophe of the First World War.

Published by Amalgamated Press in London, the Harmsworth Atlas was part of Alfred Harmsworth’s project to bring high-quality geographical knowledge within reach of the ordinary British reader. Its flag charts were educational tools in the most direct sense — instruments for teaching geography, history, and political awareness to a generation growing up in a world that was, for the first time, genuinely global. They are also, in retrospect, documents of a world on the eve of its transformation: the flags of empires that would not survive the century, captured at the last moment of their apparent permanence.
