In the 16th century, Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522–1605) — professor of natural history at the University of Bologna and founder of one of Europe’s first botanical gardens — did something that had never been done before: he looked at plants with the combined eyes of a scientist and an artist, and drew exactly what he saw, not the simplified diagrams of medieval herbals but the actual plants growing in his garden, observed with a precision and curiosity that was entirely new. Both covers reproduce illustrations from his manuscript Piante Fiori Frutti: the front features a radish (Raphanus sativus) in white and purple tones with its complete root system; the back showcases a long turnip (Brassica rapa) with leafy greens — scientific documents made by someone who believed even the most common garden vegetable deserved to be recorded with the same care as the rarest exotic specimen.
