In 1846, the year Neptune was discovered and the Victorian public’s hunger for astronomical knowledge was at its height, the English cartographer John Emslie (1813–1875) produced two of the most striking astronomical diagrams of the era for London publisher James Reynolds — designed not merely to inform, but to make the cosmos legible and beautiful. The front cover reproduces his Transparent Solar System (1846), a chart designed to be backlit so that orbital paths and planetary details would glow against darkness; the back presents The Central Sun and Theory of the Stellar Universe (1846), illustrating Johann Heinrich Mädler’s hypothesis that the star Alcyone in the Pleiades was the gravitational centre of the Milky Way. Both diagrams have been faithfully modified: the original white backgrounds inverted to black, restoring the luminous effect of Emslie’s transparency technique and returning the charts to something closer to what they were always meant to be — a window onto the night sky.
