There are few fruits as laden with meaning as the pomegranate. Cultivated for five thousand years across the Mediterranean and the Middle East, it has been the fruit of Persephone's underworld, the symbol of righteousness in Jewish tradition, the emblem of resurrection in Christian iconography — and, in 1779, the subject of John Miller's most precise and beautiful copperplate engravings.
The front cover reproduces Miller's hand-colored copperplate engraving of Punica granatum — the crimson flower with its crumpled petals, the whole fruit with its leathery rind, and the cross-section revealing the jewel-like arils and seed chambers within, from John Miller (Johann Sebastian Müller, 1715–1785), 1779, set against a dramatic black background that transforms Enlightenment botanical science into gallery-quality art. The back cover presents a complementary pomegranate engraving from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch für Kinder (1790–1830) — the twelve-volume educational encyclopedia that brought natural history to every curious mind across the German-speaking world.
