Between approximately 1895 and 1930, the camera transformed from a specialist instrument into a consumer object — and the advertising industry transformed alongside it; both covers reproduce an original collage composed from camera advertising imagery of the 1900s–1920s (posters, press advertisements, and catalogue illustrations from the golden age of photographic marketing), arranged in a mosaic that moves across three distinct graphic styles: the sinuous ornament of Art Nouveau, the flat colour and bold outline of Plakatstil, and the angular geometry of Art Déco, with cameras, lenses, elegantly dressed photographers, and studio interiors all assembled into a single portrait of an era when seeing the world through a lens felt like the most modern thing imaginable.
