There is a particular kind of Paris postcard that anyone who has ever browsed a bouquiniste stall along the Seine will recognise immediately. The colours are slightly too saturated — the sky a deep, confident blue, the stone of the monuments a warm honey gold, the Seine a ribbon of turquoise that no actual river has ever quite matched. The typography is bold and unhesitating: PARIS, in capital letters, as if the city required no further introduction. These are the postcards of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s — and they capture something true about Paris even in their exaggeration: the city really is that beautiful.
The front cover presents a vintage postcard collage with the Eiffel Tower as centrepiece — shown in a large historical photograph and a smaller central graphic — surrounded by Les Invalides with its golden dome, La Madeleine's imposing colonnade, the white domes of Sacré-Cœur rising from Montmartre, and the Louvre palace complex, layered with vintage typography spelling PARIS in bold Belle Époque print styles. The back cover continues the journey with Napoleon's Arc de Triomphe commanding attention, the modern Louvre Pyramid in striking contrast, the opulent Opéra Garnier in Beaux-Arts magnificence, Notre-Dame Cathedral in its medieval Gothic glory, and Montmartre — all layered in the saturated, confident style of the golden age of the Paris postcard.
