In 1810, a ten-year-old Irish boy named Kenelm Henry Digby sat before the stuffed specimens in Dublin's great museums and drew what he saw. His watercolour of the Eagle Owl — Bubo bubo, the largest owl in Europe — and the Small Horned Owl from Hudson's Bay, copied from a living bird exhibited in Buffon, are among the most charming natural history illustrations of the early nineteenth century, drawn with the directness of someone who found these creatures genuinely extraordinary.
