Leonardo da Vinci began painting her around 1503 and could not stop — he carried the portrait with him for the rest of his life, from Florence to Milan to Rome to France, where he died in 1519 with the painting still in his possession; for four centuries after that the Mona Lisa hung in the Louvre as a respected but not uniquely celebrated masterpiece, until on 21 August 1911 an Italian handyman named Vincenzo Peruggia walked out of the museum with the painting hidden under his coat and everything changed; the front cover features Leonardo’s Mona Lisa (c. 1503–1519), painted on poplar wood with his revolutionary sfumato technique, her gaze following the viewer with uncanny persistence and her smile shifting between warmth and enigma, while the back cover features Achille Beltrame’s iconic 1911 illustration from La Domenica del Corriere depicting the moment that transformed the Mona Lisa into a global cultural obsession — the theft that launched a two-year international search and forever changed museum security worldwide.
