In the 1910s and 1920s, Italy’s national tourism agency ENIT commissioned a generation of artists to reimagine the Grand Tour for the modern traveler. The result was one of the most extraordinary bodies of travel poster art ever produced — bold lithographic compositions that distilled centuries of Italian civilization into a single image: the ochre towers of Castel Nuovo against the Bay of Naples, the gondola prows of Venice at dusk, the Roman Forum bathed in dawn light, the Gothic spires of Milan’s Duomo seen from above. These were not merely advertisements. They were invitations to a journey that had captivated European travelers since the 17th century, reissued in the visual language of the modern age.
This puzzle collection draws from four of the greatest ENIT travel posters of the golden age — each piece count revealing a different city and a different master. The 110-piece puzzle features Mario Borgoni’s luminous 1920 Napoli lithograph for ENIT, Castel Nuovo’s ochre towers against the Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius rising in the distance, bold saturated colors and geometric shadows printed by the renowned firm Richter & C. The 252-piece puzzle features a dramatic ENIT c.1928 Venezia composition — gondola prows and colorful mooring poles, the silhouette of Santa Maria della Salute rising from the lagoon in modernist chromatic contrasts. The 520-piece puzzle features Géo Dorival’s celebrated 1913 Rome poster for the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée railway — the Roman Forum at dawn, the columns of the Temple of Saturn bathed in intense orange light. The 1014-piece puzzle features Alessandro Pomi’s luminous 1920 Milano lithograph — the viewer atop the Duomo’s terraces, looking out over a forest of Gothic marble spires and pinnacles in early Art Déco warmth.
