And its tradition of illustrated natural history publication — sustained by the imperial patronage of the Habsburgs and the scientific ambition of a generation of Austrian naturalists — produced, in the second half of the nineteenth century, some of the most beautiful and scientifically rigorous works of natural history illustration ever made. The quartz crystals of the Austrian Alps were collected by naturalists and sold to museums and private collectors across the continent.
