Jacob Sturm's 1887 Naturgeschichte des Pflanzenreichs brought together eleven species from two of the most important families of European flora on a single Plate XXVI — from the Rosaceae, Fragaria vesca (wild strawberry), Rubus fruticosus (blackberry), Potentilla anserina (silverweed), Dryas octopetala (mountain avens), Rosa canina (dog rose), and Geum urbanum (wood avens); and from the Papaveraceae, Papaver rhoeas (common red poppy), Papaver somniferum (opium poppy), Chelidonium majus (greater celandine), Tormentilla erecta (tormentil), and Capparis spinosa (caper) — a portrait of European wildflower diversity from the alpine to the Mediterranean, reproduced in full across both covers.
