Carry the song of the European forest — when Kurt Lampert's 1905 Die Singvögel Europas gave the finches, grosbeaks, and crossbills of the European avifauna their most precise and beautiful chromolithographic portraits, and the golden age of natural history illustration reached one of its finest expressions in the documentation of the continent's most beloved songbirds.
Kurt Lampert (1859–1918) — German zoologist and director of the Royal Natural History Museum in Stuttgart — devoted his 1905 atlas Die Singvögel Europas (The Songbirds of Europe) to the systematic documentation of European songbird species through chromolithographic plates of extraordinary scientific precision and visual beauty. Chromolithography allowed Lampert's artists to reproduce the subtle gradations of bird plumage, the iridescent sheen of feathers, and the characteristic postures of each species with a fidelity that earlier hand-colored engraving techniques could not match. This distinguished hardcover journal presents two of the most celebrated plates: Plate 1 with finches on the front, and Plate 2 with grosbeaks and crossbills on the back.
Front Cover — Plate 1: Goldfinch, Linnet, Siskin, Serin, Citril Finch & Twite, Kurt Lampert, Die Singvögel Europas, 1905:
The front cover presents Lampert's Plate 1 — six European finch species in chromolithographic precision: the Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) with its brilliant red face and yellow wing bars; the Linnet (Linaria cannabina) with its rosy breast; the Siskin (Spinus spinus) with its yellow-green plumage; the Serin (Serinus serinus), the smallest European finch; the Citril Finch (Carduelis citrinella) of the Alpine meadows; and the Twite (Linaria flavirostris) of the northern moorlands — six species representing the extraordinary diversity of the European finch family.
Back Cover — Plate 2: Bullfinch, Scarlet Rosefinch, Pine Grosbeak, Crossbill, Parrot Crossbill & Two-barred Crossbill, Kurt Lampert, 1905:
The back cover presents Lampert's Plate 2 — six species from the grosbeak and crossbill families: the Bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula) with its deep rose-red breast; the Scarlet Rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus) with its crimson head; the Pine Grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator), the largest European finch; and three crossbill species — Common (Loxia curvirostra), Parrot (Loxia pytyopsittacus), and Two-barred (Loxia leucoptera) — whose uniquely crossed bills are one of the most extraordinary evolutionary adaptations in the avian world, perfectly designed for extracting seeds from conifer cones.
