In 1828, the Marseille naturalist Polydore Roux began publishing his Crustacés de la Méditerranée et de son littoral — the most comprehensive study of Mediterranean crustaceans ever attempted, with hand-colored copperplate stipple engravings produced from freshly collected specimens under his direct supervision. The front cover reproduces Plate 32, Portunus tuberculatos (tuberculated swimming crab), the back Plate 19, Galathea strigosa (spiny squat lobster) — vivid red with blue transverse stripes, one of the most visually dramatic crustaceans of the Mediterranean.
