Both covers carry their figures in vintage theatrical style on a warm cream ground: Arlecchino in his diamond-patterned costume, Colombina, Pantalone, Il Dottore, the Innamorati, and the masked Zanni, arranged in theatrical composition that draws on the iconographic tradition of 16th–18th century Italian popular theater, from the troupes of the Gelosi and Andreini to the stages of Venice, Paris, and Madrid.
