In 1545, a company of performers signed a contract in Padua that would change the history of theater. The Commedia dell'Arte gave the world Arlecchino, Colombina, Pantalone, and the Innamorati — and with them, every comic archetype that has made an audience laugh since. This journal carries their figures in vintage theatrical style, arranged on a warm beige ground, tapa and contratapa alike: a full cast, always ready to perform.

The front and back covers feature a vintage-style illustration of the Commedia dell'Arte's principal characters — Arlecchino in his diamond-patterned costume, Colombina, Pantalone, Il Dottore, the Innamorati, and the masked Zanni — arranged in theatrical composition on a warm cream ground. The full-wrap design draws on the iconographic tradition of 16th–18th century Italian popular theater, from the troupes of the Gelosi and Andreini to the stages of Venice, Paris, and Madrid.
