In 1814, as Napoleon's empire drew to a close, François-Pierre Chaumeton and Jean Louis Marie Poiret's Flore médicale documented France's medicinal plants with illustrations by Pierre Jean François Turpin (1775–1840) that understood botanical art as portraiture rather than diagram — the front cover presents Plate 261 (Oxalide, wood sorrel) and the back Plate 348 (Violette, sweet violet, Napoleon's personal emblem), among Turpin's most exquisite plates.
