Carry the chromatic splendor of five continents — where El Tesoro de la Juventud gathered thirteen extraordinary Lepidoptera, from the electric-green Birdwing of Oceania to the geometric Diadem of Madagascar.
This hardcover journal celebrates the fourth and final Lepidoptera plate from El Tesoro de la Juventud (The Book of Knowledge), the beloved Spanish-language encyclopedia of the early 20th century whose chromolithographic illustrations — many based on the work of French naturalist Adolphe Millot — awakened scientific curiosity in generations of young readers. This closing plate of the series is anchored by two of the world's most spectacular species: the Ornithoptera priamus (Common Birdwing), one of the largest and most breathtaking butterflies on Earth, native to Oceania and celebrated for its electric green wings; and the Hypolimnas dexithea (Madagascar Diadem), an endemic jewel of Madagascar with its majestic geometric pattern of white, black, and brown. Both front and back covers share this luminous plate on a fresh mint-green background, a custom intervention by LeBonJournal that evokes the meadows and tropical forests where these thirteen species make their home.
Front & Back Cover — Thirteen Lepidoptera: The plate assembles a remarkable cast from across the globe: the iconic Aglais io (Peacock Butterfly) of European gardens with its dramatic blue eye-spots; the vibrant Lycaena phlaeas (Small Copper) of European meadows; the Australian Geitoneura minyas; the tropical Aeria eurimedia with its elongated yellow and black striped wings; the brilliantly toxic-warning Rhodogastria bubo moth in white and pink; the pale-yellow Colias hyale (Pale Clouded Yellow); the diurnal Cleis hypoleuca moth; the European Saturnia pyri (Great Peacock Moth) — the continent's largest moth — with its owl-eye ocelli; the intricate Zerynthia rumina (Spanish Festoon) with its black lines and red spots on yellow; the pearl-eyed Enodia portlandia of the Satyrinae; and the slender European micro-moth Metzneria intestinella.
