The Diccionario Enciclopédico Salvat, published in Spain in the 1950s, was one of the great encyclopedic achievements of mid-century Spanish publishing — a work celebrated above all for the exceptional artistic quality of its scientific illustrations, produced in the golden tradition of detailed natural history illustration before colour photography became the standard in encyclopedias. This ornithology plate assembles eleven of the world’s most vividly coloured songbirds from four continents: the seven-coloured Pitta brachyura (Indian Pitta) of the Indian subcontinent, the Hirundo rustica (Barn Swallow), the Carduelis carduelis (European Goldfinch) with its red face and yellow wing-bar, the crested Tauraco livingstonii (Livingstone’s Turaco) of Africa, the Ficedula parva (Red-breasted Flycatcher), the iridescent Cinnyricinclus leucogaster (Violet-backed Starling), the Agelaius phoeniceus (Red-winged Blackbird), the Carpodacus erythrinus (Common Rosefinch), the legendary Cardinalis cardinalis (Northern Cardinal), the jewel-like Archilochus colubris (Ruby-throated Hummingbird), and the brilliantly blue Passerina cyanea (Indigo Bunting) — the original beige and green background preserved intact, an authentic mid-century scientific illustration presented exactly as Salvat’s readers encountered it.
