In 1672, a Flemish painter named Jan Siberechts crossed the Channel and arrived in England. He brought with him a tradition of topographical precision and atmospheric sensitivity that the English countryside had never received before — and he turned it, in 1675, toward a Kent estate called Bayhall.
This journal carries his view. The front cover features Siberechts’ circa 1675 painting A View of Bayhall, Pembury, Kent — the manor house in its parkland, farm workers in the foreground, the rolling hills of the Weald receding into a hazy English afternoon. The back cover extends the panorama into the wider Kentish landscape. Together they wrap the journal in one of the earliest and finest topographical landscapes in British art history, now held at the Yale Center for British Art.
