In 1860, Maurice Sand (1823–1889) — son of George Sand, illustrator, and lifelong devotee of puppet theatre — published Masques et Bouffons (comédie italienne), the definitive visual record of Commedia dellArte characters, illustrated in collaboration with engraver Alexandre Manceau (1817–1865). Unlike static period engravings, Sand’s figures appear mid-performance, capturing the buffonesque essence of each character through hand-colored etchings (eau-forte) with vibrant watercolor illumination (pochoir technique) applied to luxury editions.
