In the early twentieth century, European naturalists documented freshwater fish with lithographic precision — producing identification atlases that combined scientific rigour with the visual clarity of chromolithographic printing. Emil Walter's Unsere Süßwasserfische (1913) and the British Our Country's Fishes (1902) stand among the finest examples of this tradition.

The front cover features five cyprinid species — Bream, Bleak, Rudd, Roach, and Ide — rendered in the anatomical lithographic style of Walter's 1913 atlas. The back cover showcases salmonid species from Our Country's Fishes (1902): Brown Trout, Atlantic Salmon in various life stages, and Char species including Dolly Varden and Windermere Char with their distinctive orange-red underbellies — rendered in the chromolithographic identification-plate style of early 20th-century European natural history publishing.
