In the autumn of 1909, a young artist named Pamela Colman Smith completed one of the most consequential commissions in the history of illustration — seventy-eight watercolour drawings, produced in months, for a tarot deck that would become the most widely used in the world; her name did not appear on the original edition, but the images endure. The front cover reproduces a curated arrangement of the complete 22 Major Arcana — from The Fool’s open-hearted leap to The World’s triumphant completion — alongside the Ace of Wands, from Pamela Colman Smith’s Rider-Waite-Smith tarot (Rider Company, London, 1909), rendered in her distinctive folk art style rich with Kabbalistic, astrological, and Western esoteric symbolism; the back presents cards from the Minor Arcana suits of Wands and Cups — Smith’s revolutionary pictorial scenes for each card, the elemental forces of fire and water, passion and intuition, that made the psychological dimensions of the tarot immediately legible for the first time.
